CRC Programs Highlight Commitment to College Education and Job Training

California Resources Corporation (CRC) believes in investing in the education of our youth. We champion programs that enable diverse communities to learn and be inspired about STEM education and the oil and natural gas industry, and we are proud to provide technical workforce training to Californians that that may not generally have an easy path to attaining good-paying, high-quality jobs.

We partner with universities and non-profit groups to develop educational programs providing paid internships and job training. Providing educational opportunities to young students is important for CRC – it helps connects kids to fields with good-paying jobs in the energy industry and is especially important for low-income students. Having access to educational opportunities is essential to providing a path to the middle class for our diverse communities.

Here is a list of some education and workforce training initiatives that CRC has developed to meet the needs of our local communities and a testimonial from one of our interns:

• CIPA High School Employment Program – For the fourth year in a row, CRC partnered with the California Independent Petroleum Association and other oil and gas companies in the state to continue a summer employment program providing graduating high school seniors with paid STEM jobs and exposure to the California oil and gas industry. Participating students throughout the state relocated to dormitories at California State University, Bakersfield, where they developed skills in a field-based position. This is a unique opportunity that allowed high school kids the chance to gain work experience that can help their future careers.

• CRC Summer Internships for College Students – This past summer, CRC re-connected with universities and Cal State colleges such as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Colorado School of Mines, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Long Beach to recruit interns pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in petroleum, chemical, mechanical, geoscience, computer science, human resources, and marketing. Summer internships provide a valuable experience for students, allowing them to learn the importance of the petroleum industry and providing them with opportunities to develop their skills while supplying hands-on involvement beneficial in the classroom and on the work field. Our ongoing summer internship program has produced a pipeline of diverse talent through the years. CRC had 23 summer interns placed within different functions throughout the company.

• Los Angeles Trade Tech College Internship Program – CRC partners with the California Building and Construction Trades Council to host a unique field training internship program with Los Angeles Trade Tech College (LATTC) offering students the opportunity to gain real-world workforce experience. This past June, college students from LATTC pursuing a degree or certificate in process/chemical technology and lineman, had the chance to participate in a 10-week paid internship. CRC field operations supervisors assisted student-interns with all facets related to oil and gas operations while observing and understanding the basic equipment and facilities. Among our man-made islands, THUMS, in the Long Beach Harbor, interns rotated through the departments of operations, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.

• STEM Advantage – CRC partners with a non-profit organization called STEM Advantage that inspires young women and underserved communities to pursue STEM careers through paid internships, mentorships and scholarships. CRC’s involvement over the past few years has provided students with internships in engineering and computer science from CSU Long Beach and CSU Dominguez Hills.

• Corporate Work Study Program at Verbum Dei High School – Selected interns from Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles take a full course load of college-preparatory classes in addition to working one day each week at CRC. The Work-Study Program is designed to meet our entry-level employee needs. The partnership also offers invaluable mentoring and motivation for students while reinforcing the thinking strategies and lifelong learning behaviors emphasized in the classroom.
